This case study follows an 8 year old girl that was suffering from ear infections, headaches and neck pain for over three years. During that time she had been prescribed multiple rounds of antibiotics, two ear surgeries, and one sinus surgery none of which helped her conditions. Due to a lack of progress from these traditional methods her parents brought her to a Chiropractor. The Chiropractic evaluation found several abnormalities in her spinal structure commonly referred to as subluxations.
Basic anatomy texts will show that when viewed from the front your spine should be straight up and down and when viewed from the side have 3 curves. It arcs forward in the neck, backwards in the mid back, where the ribs are, and then forward again in the lower back. The Chiropractic evaluation revealed that the normal curve in her neck was completely reversed! This made her an excellent candidate for Chiropractic care.
After one month of treatment by the Chiropractor this little girl had no more headache, sinus or ear pain. She had a third surgery scheduled at this time and cancelled it. She continued with care for two more months when a follow up exam was preformed showing her neck curve had returned to the normal forward arc. She was then released from care. A follow up one year later showed none of her previous issues of headache, neck pain, ear infections or sinus pain had returned.
So how did this work? Why was Chiropractic care able to help when the traditional methods failed? By correcting this little girl’s spine it allowed her nervous system to function properly. After all it is the spinal cord that the bones in our spine are protecting. With her neck subluxated it reduced the nerve flow to the muscles that control the draining of fluid from her ears allowing excessive bacteria build up and cause infection. The same thing was happening in her sinuses. The headaches could also be caused from the spinal misalignments as the reduction in nerve flow would affect blood flow to the head in addition to causing great strain to the muscles that support the neck and hold the head upright. By restoring normal structure to her spine the nervous system and musculature system are allowed to function properly. This approach fixes the cause of problems instead of just masking symptoms.
